Sansevieria Zeylanica Care Guide

About Sansevieria Zeylanica Plant

The Snake Plant Zeylanica (Sansevieria zeylanica) is a beautiful succulent plant with thick, upright leaves. Its foliage is light green with dark green, striped patterns. It’s also known under its other botanical names, Sansevieria trifasciata and Dracaena zeylanica, after Snake plants were reclassified into the Dracaena genus in 2018.

Zeylanica is a tropical plant native to West Africa, and it grows best in USDA hardiness zones 9-11. Available in small and large sizes, this stunning houseplant will thrive for decades, often living for nearly 30 years indoors. Caring for Sansevieria Zeylanica is exceptionally easy, and these plants are often described as thriving on neglect.

Keep this plant away from curious pets, as it can be toxic if ingested. Snake plants symbolize protection and resilience.

Zeylanica Snake Plant Care: Growing Tips

Sansevieria is one of the easiest plants to care for. Find out how to care for Sansevieria Zeylanica Snake Plant with our simple tips:

Sansevieria Zeylanica Plant: Light Requirements & Temperature

  • Light: The Snake Zeylanica plant thrives in bright, indirect light. But it also adapts easily to low-light spaces and can tolerate direct sunlight.
  • Temperature: Your Sansevieria plant will grow best in temperatures from 60°F to 80°F. Bring indoors if the temperatures drop below 55°F, and keep away from drafts.

Zeylanica Snake Plant: Watering & Humidity

  • Watering: Water sparingly for the best Zeylanica care. This drought-tolerant plant stores water in its leaves, so it’s easy to overwater. Let the soil dry thoroughly before watering.
  • Humidity: This plant prefers dry air. Misting is not advised, as water can gather at the base of the plant, leading to root rot.

Sansevieria Zeylanica: Soil, Fertilizer, and Repotting

  • Soil: Sansevieria plants grow best in a well-draining potting mix for cactus or succulent plants.
  • Fertilizer: Feed twice annually in the spring and summer. Use a balanced, liquid fertilizer, diluted to half strength.
  • Repotting: Repot every 2-3 years into a slightly larger pot. Always use pots with drainage holes.

Zeylanica Snake Plant: Propagation

Propagate your Sansevieria Zeylanica Snake plant by taking leaf cuttings, letting them callus overnight, and planting them in potting soil. You can also multiply your Zeylanica via division and transplant the offsets (pups) into individual pots.

Sansevieria Zeylanica: Problems and Pruning

Overwatering is the biggest danger for Sansevieria Trifasciata Zeylanica, which is otherwise resilient to pests and adapts to various growing conditions. Yellowing, soft leaves that fall over are a signal that you’re watering too much. Trim your snake plant occasionally to remove any dry leaves and keep the soil clean from debris.

Zeylanica Snake Plant: Companion Plants & Placement Options

Sansevieria Zeylanica benefits include its attractive foliage patterns and vertical shape, which make it ideal for small rooms and other compact spaces.

Great to Place on

Getting a vibrant Snake plant is the perfect way to add greenery to narrow spaces, as this plant’s leaves grow upwards. It will thrive in low-light spaces like hallways or offices, and its vertical leaves add interest and texture to plant displays.

Sansevieria Zeylanica Plant Grows Well With
