Orchid Plants: Overview

Surround yourself with gorgeous and enduring blooming orchids for your home or office. Phalaenopsis orchids are the most popular and the easiest to grow. They’re often called moth orchids because their flowers resemble butterflies or moths.

In their natural habitat, orchids are epiphytes, often growing on trees. The orchid Phalaenopsis is native to the tropical areas of Asia and Australia, and this tropical plant is best suited for hardiness zones 10-12. There are over 25,000 types of orchids, including terrestrial and epiphytic varieties. Phalaenopsis orchid care is easy, as these orchids can be grown as regular house plants and do not require a greenhouse environment to flourish.

How often do orchids bloom? Phalaenopsis plants can bloom twice a year, with flowers lasting up to three months. Orchids are non-toxic and safe for pets. Orchid Plant Care: Growing Guide

Orchids are rewarding and easy-care houseplants, filling your home with elegance and color. Find out how to care for orchids to encourage ample blooms with these straightforward tips!

Watering, Light, Humidity, and Temperature

If you wonder how to water orchids properly, remember that these plants are tropical epiphytes. They should never be left sitting in water. Dip your orchid in water, and then wait for it to drain completely before replacing it in its decorative pot. Ideally, use filtered or distilled water.

Bright but indirect light is best for moth orchids. Direct sunlight can damage their leaves.

Orchids care about humidity more than many other house plants. Boost your indoor air humidity by placing the orchids on pebble-filled trays, grouping them with other plants, or using a humidifier. Avoid misting in the evenings or during cold, damp weather.

Warm room temperatures of 75°-85°F are perfect for orchids. Slightly lower night temperatures around 65°F will promote better blooming.

Repotting, Soil, and Feeding

Orchids don’t require immediate repotting. Repot once every two years into fresh potting medium. Phalaenopsis orchids don’t grow in regular soil. Use bark, mixed with perlite and sphagnum moss to provide a well-draining growing medium.

Feed every month with a diluted, balanced fertilizer specially formulated for orchids throughout the growing season.

Propagation

To propagate an orchid, you need to know how to grow new orchids from your original plant. Wait for your plant to produce a keiki (baby orchid), and to repot it once it is established and strong.

Pruning, Cleaning, and Common Issues

Remove the flower spikes that have finished blooming down to the next node. This is where a new flower spike will develop. Remove yellowing lower leaves, as well. Keep the orchid medium clean from debris, and change it with fresh bark when repotting.

Mealybugs may be an issue. Remove them with a cotton swab dipped in alcohol, and apply neem oil if necessary. Wrinkled leaves are a sign that your orchid is thirsty, while overwatering can lead to root rot.
