String of Pearls Care Guide

About String of Pearls Plants

The String of Pearls (Senecio rowleyanus) is a succulent with delicate stems and spherical leaves. It gets its name from its resemblance to a string of pearl beads. Sometimes, the String of Pearls will flower with blooms that resemble tiny white puffs.

The String of Pearls is native to South Africa and grows best in USDA hardiness zones 10-11. These charming indoor plants are relatively easy to care for, as long as you provide bright, indirect light, well-draining soil, and correct watering. Keep these beautiful plants out of your pets’ reach, as they can be mildly toxic if ingested.

String of Pearls plants symbolize well-being, abundance, and good luck.

String of Pearls: Benefits

String of Pearls Plant Care: Growing Tips

The String of Pearls is a low-maintenance plant in the right growing conditions and with proper care. Find out how to care for String of Pearls in our short guide below:

String of Pearls: Light Requirements & Temperature

  • Light: This plant thrives in bright, indirect sunlight. Outdoors, partial shade is best.
  • Temperature: This succulent grows best in stable temperatures of 65-75°F. Slightly lower temperatures during the dormant season will boost flowering.

String of Pearls: Watering & Humidity

  • Watering: A mature String of Pearls succulent is drought-resistant. Water thoroughly, and then let the soil dry before each watering.
  • Humidity: The String of Pearls does well in average humidity. Mist this plant occasionally in dry weather.

String of Pearls: Soil, Fertilizer, and Repotting

  • Soil: Use well-draining succulent or cactus potting soil for this plant. Choose a shallow pot with drainage holes.
  • Fertilizer: If you’re unsure how to grow String of Pearls, remember that this succulent requires feeding once each season with a balanced succulent fertilizer. Dilute it to half strength and refrain from fertilizing in winter.
  • Repotting: Repot into a slightly larger pot once every 3 years.

String of Pearls: Propagation

Propagating String of Pearls is straightforward. The easiest method of String of Pearls propagation is via stem cuttings. Cut several strings from your plant, remove the lower leaves, and let the cuttings callous overnight. Then plant them in moist, well-draining soil.

String of Pearls Plant: Problems and Pruning

Some common problems with the String of Pearls plant include leggy growth due to insufficient light and shriveling of the bead-like leaves because of watering issues. Soft, wrinkled leaves are a sign of overwatering, while shriveled leaves and dry soil usually indicate underwatering.

When you care for String of Pearls, trim any dead or damaged leaves to encourage lush growth. Keep the soil free from debris.
