Prince of Orange Philodendron Care Guide

About Philodendron Prince of Orange

Philodendron Prince of Orange (Philodendron erubescens Prince of Orange) earns its name fast. New leaves open in warm orange and copper shades, then slowly fade into golden green and deep green as they age. The result is a tropical plant that looks colorful even without flowers.

This Orange Philodendron grows best outdoors in USDA Zones 10 to 12, but it’s usually kept indoors as a houseplant. Care is fairly simple, especially if you give your philodendron filtered light, warmth, and a pot with good drainage.

The Philodendron Prince of Orange plant has an upright, compact shape, so it doesn’t trail like some Philodendron varieties. It’s not pet-friendly, so keep it away from cats and dogs. Other varieties, sought-after by collectors and worth exploring, include Philodendron Florida BronzePhilodendron White Princess, and Philodendron Ring of Fire

Philodendron: Benefits

  • New growth brings orange, copper, and green colors
  • Easier to care for than many rare tropical plants
  • Brightens desks, shelves, and plant stands
  • A natural air-purifier
  • Makes a colorful gift for foliage lovers

Philodendron Prince of Orange Care: Growing Tips

Philodendron Prince of Orange care is not fussy. Give this plant bright filtered light, a loose potting mix, and time to dry slightly between waterings.

Prince of Orange Philodendron: Light Requirements & Temperature

  • Light: A bright room suits this plant best, as long as the sun is not beating straight onto the leaves. If the orange leaves start looking muted, the plant may need a brighter spot.
  • Temperature: Keep it somewhere warm and steady, ideally between 65°F and 85°F. Drafty doors, cold windowsills, and blasting vents are worth avoiding.

Philodendron Prince of Orange: Humidity & Watering

  • Watering: Let the top layer of soil dry before watering again. Give your Philodendron ‘Prince of Orange’ a proper drink, then tip away anything left sitting in the saucer.
  • Humidity: Most homes are humid enough for this plant. If the air feels very dry, place it near a few other houseplants.

Prince of Orange Philodendron: Soil, Fertilizer, and Repotting

  • Soil: A heavy mix will hold too much water, so use something airy. Potting soil with perlite and orchid bark is a good choice.
  • Fertilizer: Feed lightly once a month in spring and summer. Leave it alone through fall and winter when it slows down.
  • Repotting: Roots coming through the holes or wrapping around the pot mean it’s time to size up. Choose a pot only slightly bigger.

Philodendron Prince of Orange: Propagation

Philodendrons are easy to propagate. Wait until the plant produces a rooted side shoot or offset. Separate it gently, move it into fresh soil, and keep your Philodendron Prince of Orange warm while it settles.

Prince of Orange Philodendron: Problems and Pruning

If the leaves yellow, droop, brown at the edges, or lose color, check the basics first. Wet soil, harsh sun, low light, dry air, and cold drafts are the usual troublemakers. Trim damaged leaves with clean scissors.

Philodendron Prince of Orange: Companion Plants & Placement Options

Your Philodendron Prince of Orange plant will shine when surrounded by taller, softer, or trailing foliage. In a mostly green plant group, its warm leaves add a nice color break.

Great to Place on

Place your Philodendron Prince of Orange on a desk, shelf, dresser, side table, or plant stand. It also works well in bedrooms, offices, and living rooms with bright, filtered light.

Philodendron Prince of Orange Plant Grows Well With

Pair your Prince of Orange Philodendron with plants that like similar indoor conditions.

  • Orange Bird of Paradise: The large upright leaves of the Orange Bird of Paradise plant add height behind the compact orange philodendron.
  • Song of India Plant: The narrow green and yellow leaves of the Song of India plant bring a sharper texture beside the broader Philodendron foliage.
  • Jade Pothos: The trailing vines of the Jade Pothos soften the display when placed near the upright Philodendron Prince of Orange plant.
