Golden Pothos Care Guide

About Golden Pothos Plant

The Golden Pothos (Epipremnum aureum) is a tropical plant, much-loved for its vibrant green leaves and trailing vines. Commonly known as the Devil’s Ivy, it can be grown outdoors in hardiness zones 10-12. The Golden Pothos belongs to the Araceae family and originates from the South Pacific regions. It thrives in warm, humid environments, so it’s best kept indoors in the colder months.

The Golden Pothos is almost impossible to kill; thus, it’s tolerant of occasional neglect. So if you forget to water it once in a while, it won’t suffer much.

Epipremnum aureum is ideal for greening up both indoor and outdoor spaces, especially empty vertical ones, such as walls. In addition, the Golden Pothos is associated with positive energy, money, and good fortune. Unfortunately, it can be toxic to animals if ingested, so keep it out of reach of your curious pets.

Other Pothos varieties include the variegated Marble Queen Pothos, the electric Neon Pothos, and more.

Golden Pothos Plant Care: Growing Tips

Everyone’s favorite Golden Pothos is a low-maintenance indoor plant that doesn’t require much attention to thrive. See below our expert Epipremnum aureum care tips!

Golden Pothos: Light Requirements & Temperature

  • Light: The Golden Pothos prefers medium, indirect light, but can tolerate low-light conditions, too. Still, insufficient light can result in legginess and slow growth.
  • Temperature: Keep the temperatures between 60°F and 85°F for optimal health. Protect your Golden Pothos from cold drafts and sudden temperature drops.

Golden Pothos: Watering & Humidity

  • Watering: Water your Golden Pothos once a week or every 10 days, depending on the temperature and light it receives. These low-water and easy-care plants are resilient and tough.
  • Humidity: It enjoys higher humidity (40-60%), so ensure you mist your Pothos occasionally during dry, hot spells.

Golden Pothos Plant: Soil, Fertilizer, and Repotting

  • Soil: Use a well-draining soil, mixed with sand, bark, perlite, or coco coir; this will minimize the risk of root rot.
  • Fertilizer: Feed your Golden Pothos monthly during the active growing season (spring and summer); use a balanced, liquid fertilizer diluted to half strength.
  • Repotting: Usually, repotting is required every 1-2 years or when the roots begin to outgrow the pot. Refresh the soil to supply your plant with nutrients.

Golden Pothos: Propagation

You can propagate your pothos plant easily from stem cuttings and root them in water or moist soil. Place your new Golden Pothos babies in a warm location with indirect sunlight and provide them with extra humidity for best results. These lucky plants make a great gift, so why don’t you share them with friends and loved ones?.

Golden Pothos: Problems and Pruning

Common issues include droopy foliage caused by too much light, low humidity, or underwatering. Overwatering, on the other hand, can lead to yellow leaves and soggy roots. Prune your pothos to remove damaged foliage with a sterilized tool to promote healthy new growth and a busher look.

Golden Pothos: Companion Plants & Placement Options

The Golden Pothos is a popular, trailing houseplant that adds elegance and style to vertical spaces. Grow it in a hanging basket to showcase its gorgeous cascading vines.

Great to Place on

Tall plantstands, elevated bookshelves, or hanging baskets are ideal placement options for your beautiful Golden Pothos. As it requires high humidity, you can keep it in the bathroom, provided it has a window that allows some light inside. A natural air purifier, this beauty will add elegance to your bedroom, too, improving your sleep and refreshing the air.

Golden Pothos Plant Grows Well With

  • Pothos Pearls and Jade: Complement your Golden Pothos plant’s deep-green foliage with the creamy variegation of the Pearls and Jade Pothos’ leaves.
  • Stromanthe Triostar: The pink hues of Stromanthe Triostar look great against the green leaves of Epipremnum aureum.
  • Neon Philodendron: The Neon Philodendron is another trailing plant with gorgeous neon-green leaves that contrast beautifully with the darker foliage of the Golden Pothos.
